Console Wars
December 8th, 2005
There has been a lot of Console Wars over the years and I have kind of been all over the shop with regards to what I have been playing and what platform I have been playing on. At the moment the UK is beginning of it’s first batch of XBOX 360’s and I’m sure that folk are enjoying themselves and to a certain extent I am jealous, I am however looking forward to seeing what Nintendo are bringing to the table.
One day I would love to have a private console archive which is all hardwired together but that is not gonna happen for a while unfortunately. To date I have owned and gamed on a BBC Micro playing such classics as Repton & Elite (even made some of my own games using a book on Basic), a Sega Mega Drive, a
When it came to the XBOX it was a must have thing, I got one 3 weeks after they came out and it cost me a bloody fortune as I never went for a package deal because I had already completed most of the games on my PC. I ended up paying for the console + 4 games + 1 extra controller which put a large dent in my bank account. I have not been dissapointed with the XBOX, I even managed to get one of the first few copies of Steel Batallion that came into the country and I have had many hours of fun out of it & my other games but there is something that I just love about Nintendo which is making me think twice about staying with Micro$ofts console stable.
There is one prime component when it comes to Nintendo and that is the aspect of FUN! These guys know how to make a fun game although I will be honest and say I haven’t played my daughters Game Cube too often but I haven’t played that many games recently. When I do it is usually on my PC although I have just plugged the Game Cube into the TV in the living room and my XBOX into a TV at my desk (dunno if that was a really silly move lol) so I am hoping to play a lot more again.
Now the reason I mentioned fun there was because I think with innovations like the Bongo set for the Game Cube are pure genius and that fact that they operate off of sound too justs adds another level to my appreciation. I even considered getting a
I dunno if you have seen it or not yet? Here is a link to the teaser video for it but if you want a laugh then check these out, they are mock ups in various shapes and forms which are in some cases just hillarious. I thought the Steel Batallion controler was cool (well, it still is one of the coolest things ever) but Nintendo’s new offering looks like it could revolutionise gaming. Heck, my other half might even start to play when it no longer involves serious controller handling and just plain fun swinging your hands about the air laughing….
So that’s it… my little summary of nothing about gaming and how I am excited about the Nintendo Revolution coming out. If you are interested then you can find out a little more about this enigmatic console over at IGN.
What are you gaming preferences?

It really is hard to settle on just one, isn’t it? I wish I had the $$$ to pick up one of each - but I spend most of gaming time on my PC. Everything’s just so much better on PC.
I also have a GameCube which I inititially got for the Resident Evil series. But having a 7 year-old daughter, it’s become more of her ‘toy’ than mine. It’s been in her bedroom for months now and she’s always rockin’ Mario Party or some Scooby Doo games.
In November of 2004 I picked up an Xbox for the Halo 2 release. I couldn’t resist any longer. I ended up selling it in July of this year to get some extra cash to put into my PC and I have to admit - I do wish I had held onto it. I had about a dozen games and played most of them regularly. Definitely my favourite console of the current gen.
The PS2, I’ve never been a fan of. Although, they have had some exclusives that almost made me buy one. God Of War is one of the raddest games ever. It has this wicked old school feel to it and so many moments that make you wanna slap your mama - just amazing! Soul Calibur 3 is another one…
Anyway, I’m sticking with my PC for now. I plan on grabbing a 360 in the new year once things calm down and they’re in stock everywhere. I’ll probably end up grabbing a Revolution for my daughter. And if the PS3 turns out to be as good as it’s looking, I’ll get one without a doubt.
Phew… longest comment ever!

lol… Cheers for the longest comment ever… I feel honoured!
Yeah consoles are a bitch, there’s always been so many to choose from although I would have to agree on the Play Station never taking my fancy besides the iToy. I’m glad I held onto my XBOX, although I could do with some new games for it, Shellshock Nam ‘67 just aint cutting the mustard for me and my good games disks are scuffed and wounded from shared flat abuse.
Bit of a pain waiting for the Revolution but I’m sure it’ll be worth it, I’m just hoping Santa brings me GUN or something for Christmas but I’m not holding out for it… until then back to UT2004 from some frag action (can’t spare the cash for Call of Duty 2 yet).
