The big modification (Part 2) … a spanner in the works??
November 24th, 2005
What an interesting turn of affairs, my big modification is still on but I have run into something that could change the future of how I blog even though I am just new to the game.
I started out with Wordpress a few months back and to tell the truth I have been perfectly happy with it but I have run into a bit of a dilema. Over the past week or so I have been intermitantly looking at what blogging tools/software are out there and the pro’s and cons of each and have ended up having a play about with Movable Type. I certainly want to play a little bit more….
My recent background has come from coding with a language called WebDNA in my last job. WebDNA was a tag based language similar to that of Coldfusion where you have a set of interpreted tags that perform certain functions and this is where my dilema stems from.
Movable Type seems to run off of a tag/template based system that I feel I could get to grips with fairly quickly whereas I have been a little intimidated by “The Loop” in Wordpress. Not that I am totally scared off by it, in fact far from it, I still fully intend to try and roll out my new design using Wordpress and get my hands dirty with a full custom job.
I am actually quite fortunate in the fact that I am getting to play about with Movable Type at my work at the moment and am beginning to get a feel for what I could achieve quite quickly using it. However, I almost feel like a treacherous dog in the fact that I am even considering leaving Wordpress so quickly after not giving it a proper chance. I guess time will tell as I play about with them… I am kinda getting the best of both worlds
I think it is an interesting line of thought as to what my goals are as I play, on one hand I want to be learning lots but on the same level I would like to have a dapper site that I am proud to be the owner of. It is hard to have a development area as your gateway to the web because nobody wants an Under Construction feel for their site, they want to have an impressive demonstration of what they can do. There will however always be a learning curve and I am trying to decide if I am going down the quick route, the learning route or most probably a combination of the 2.
I’ll let you know which way the scales tip…
